America...Sweet America...God shed His grace on thee!

The Betsy Ross Flag

I was listening to Ray Charles singing "America" today while I was walking through Sycamore Grove Park -- golden waves of grain before me and great blue skies over head. We are on the verge of an epic July 4...I do love America, America, because like Ray sings..."God shed his grace on thee and crowned thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea." The lyrics to the song first appeared as a poem published in "The Congregationalist" on July 4, 1895 written by author and teacher, Katharine Lee Bates. At 33 years of age and traveling the country, she was inspired by a trip over Colorado's Pikes Peak looking over the majestic land displayed before her. Here is the great Ray Charles singing it like no other.
Happy Independence Day!
